Folks, as we open the Word of God together, we want to be good Bereans and test all things by the Scriptures. As I open my NKJV Bible is such a faithful translation, and it’s wonderful when we can look at current events through the lens of God’s eternal truth.

Today, let’s consider two men who have come into leadership in our day, Donald Trump and Keir Starmer. Now, neither one is a perfect man. We’re all sinners saved by grace, or still in need of that grace. But we are called to look at the fruit and to discern the times.

The Holy Spirit gave us a very powerful verse in the book of James that seems to speak directly to what we’re seeing.

James 1:8 says: “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Oh, that’s a strong one! The word “double-minded” means to be pulled in two different directions at the same time, one foot in one camp, the other foot in another.

You’re trying to please everybody, and in the end you become unstable. You can’t stand firm. James is telling us that a man like that will be tossed to and fro like a wave of the sea.

He won’t receive the wisdom he needs from the Lord because his heart is divided.

Keir Starmer in Power (July 2024 – present)

Since Keir Starmer became Prime Minister back in July 2024, we’ve seen a pattern that really troubles a lot of people. He came in with many promises during the campaign,  calm, steady leadership, no big tax rises on working people, and a bright green future. But once in office, there have been repeated changes of direction.

Reports from across the UK have counted more than a dozen major U-turns in his first twenty months or so.

Things like promising not to raise taxes on working families and then bringing in increases through National Insurance and other measures. There was the cutting of winter fuel payments for many pensioners, only to bring back parts of it later when the people spoke up.

The big £28 billion green investment plan was scaled way back. Even the family farm inheritance tax was adjusted after strong pushback from rural communities.

This has left many folks feeling like there’s a gap between what was said to win the election and what is actually being done.

It creates what some are calling a “lie bubble”, nice-sounding words that don’t quite match the actions that follow. Even on immigration, the small boat crossings across the Channel stayed very high, around 41,000 in 2025, one of the highest years on record.

And then there’s this big push for Net Zero by 2050. It was presented as the wonderful way forward, having clean energy, new jobs, and a better world.

But honestly for many ordinary families in Scotland and across the UK, it has meant higher energy bills, worries about keeping the lights on when the wind doesn’t blow, and huge long-term costs.

The £28 billion pledge was quietly reduced, yet the direction remains. It’s another place where the promises sounded so good, but the fruit on the ground is painful for working people and pensioners.

Proverbs 12:22 tells us very plainly: “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.”

When words and deeds keep diverging, it brings instability.

Donald Trump in Leadership (2017–2021 and 2025–present)

Now, when we look at Donald Trump, we see a very different kind of man. He speaks in a loud, bold way, and he often uses big exaggerations and strong language.

Fact-checkers have pointed out many times where his statements went beyond the actual numbers. We have to be honest about that. None of us is without sin, and Romans 3:23 reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

But here’s what stands out about Trump, on the big issues he campaigned on, he has shown a single-minded determination.

In his second term, the numbers at the southern border dropped dramatically. Deportations increased significantly, and many people began leaving on their own. He has pushed hard for American energy production, less regulation, and policies that put the nation first. He doesn’t easily back down or flip-flop when the pressure comes. He keeps pressing in the same direction.

Some people love his rough style because he says things other politicians won’t say. Others dislike the bombast and the controversies. But you can see a consistency there that is rare in politics today.

What Does the Bible Say About Leadership and Truth?

You see, James 1:8 isn’t just for politicians, it’s for all of us. Are we double-minded in our own walk with the Lord? Do we say one thing on Sunday and live another way during the week? The Lord wants us to be single-minded in our devotion to Christ.

Other verses that help us discern in these days are:

  • Proverbs 29:2 - “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
  • Ephesians 4:25 - “Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor…”
  • Matthew 7:16 - “You will know them by their fruits…”

We don’t look for perfect men, there aren’t any. We look for direction, consistency, and the kind of fruit that lines up with God’s Word. Trump often speaks plainly about borders, energy, and issues that many would rather avoid. Starmer’s more polished approach has brought more visible changes of direction in a short time.

A Call to Biblical Discernment

Beloved, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus. No political leader is our saviour, only Christ is.

We pray for those in authority, as 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us. We vote as the Lord leads us, with a clear conscience and biblical wisdom. And we remember that our real hope is in the return of the King of kings.

The push for Net Zero, the repeated policy U-turns, and the ongoing challenges with immigration are showing us the difference between smooth words and steady direction.

When leadership appears double-minded and unstable, the people often end up paying the price.

Let’s pray for a real spiritual revival in Scotland, in the United Kingdom, and in America.

May God raise up leaders who fear Him more than they fear the media or the polls. And may you and I walk in integrity, single-minded for the Lord Jesus Christ.

As Paul wrote: “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21 NKJV)

May the Lord bless you as you seek Him in His Word and become Bible Strong.
