You know, folks, when I look at the news about our local roads here in Scotland, the A814 between Helensburgh, Cardross, and Dumbarton, I see a road that's become a real danger zone. Narrow paths, heavy logging lorries roaring by, fast cars, and too many tragic accidents over the years. Lives lost, families grieving.
It's heartbreaking, and it makes you wonder, "Lord, where's the safety? Where's the care for the people You love?"Argyll and Bute Council has been working on a plan for years, nearly 20 now, to build a safer, off-road path for walking, cycling, and wheeling.
The idea is simple: give folks a way to get around without dodging traffic on that busy A814, making it easier to reach clubs or shops like the Ardardan Farm Shop & Garden Nursery without long trips. It could reduce isolation and bring some real blessings to the community.
But here's where it gets frustrating: the council has spent over £75,000 on consultants, designs, and consultations. Hundreds of local people gave their input, yet the project keeps getting delayed.
Land issues, costs, changes to the route, it's like the Israelites wandering in the wilderness, going in circles! Some folks are saying the preferred off-road path might be scrapped, and parts could end up closer to the road after all.
If nothing gets built soon, that money feels wasted when the road is still dangerous today.
Now! For us as believers in Jesus, we don't just grumble; we turn to the Word. The Bible tells us plainly about government and authority:
"Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." (Romans 13:1)
We respect the council's role, and we pray they use wisdom. But we also know that true wisdom comes from above:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5)
I have seen the dangers up close, people walking with those lorries flying past, and concerned for your family and others.
Having a shepherd's heart. This project could be a real answer to prayer if it's done right: safer paths, better access, less isolation. But if delays and spending keep piling up without results, it reminds us that man's plans are not always God's perfect timing.
The Lord says in Psalm 37:5 "Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass."
So let's do that, commit this whole thing to Him.
Pray for the councillors, for wise decisions, for funding that actually builds something safe. Pray for protection on those roads: "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust." (Psalm 18:2)
If you'd like to get involved, contact your local councillors or MSP Jackie Baillie, they need to hear from folks who are concerned.
And keep sharing your heart; the Lord uses ordinary people to make a difference.
The Lord is faithful; He will guide and protect.
In His love
Peter
